Junior Flashpacking South Africa - Accomodation on the Baz Bus Route

I've just gone through my South Africa photos and come to the following conclusions:

  1. I forget to take pictures of cool places
  2. Pictures that I take turn out looking like I was drunk when I took them
Those factors considered, I've salvaged some pictures from our little flashpacking adventure - all 3 weeks of it! Some pictures are rather irrelevant but never mind that. =)

We started our holiday in Johannesburg, where we stayed at Sleek Backpackers (www.sleek.co.za). The owner Steve picked us up at the airport, and he was an interesting character to say the least. He bargained himself a free dinner in exchange for taking us to supposedly the best restaurant in Jo'burg, Moyo's (www.moyo.co.za). Whilst I have no pictures of the hostel, I do have a picture of Steve randomly picking up drums at Moyo's to accompany the band:

We then went on a safari trip that was included as part of our Baz Bus ticket (www.bazbus.co.za). We stayed in tents for 2 nights (ready made tents that did not involve assembly, thank goodness for that) and spent the last night in a cool private game lodge (www.pezulu.co.za)!

For the price we paid, it was well worth it. We got a lovely double room with drapes over the bed, and a bathroom I loved for its rusticness. =)

To top it off, there was a pool on the doorstep to our room! (the door to our room is the one behind the tree on the left)

After an overnighter at Inchanga Resort Hostel (www.inchangaresort.co.za) in Jo'burg, we embarked on our Baz Bus journey. First destination, Amphitheatre Backpackers, Northern Drakensburg (www.amphibackpackers.co.za).

With gorgeous views of the Amphitheare that no camera can do justice, rooms tatched roof huts and delicious food, this turned out to be my favourite stop of the trip. The people were really nice (Gareth and his rather stoned brother Darren) although they did turn down my offer to purchase the place for a couple of hundred grand (pounds). =(

We hopped back on the Bus to continue our adventure. Next stop, Durban where we spent a night at Tekweni (www.tekwenibackpackers.co.za). This is where we had a random cat walk into our room through the window, and settle down to sleep on a bed. Apparently there's no need for invitation around here!

We then managed to end up in Hipy-ville. I'm not kidding, it's a town full of hippies from the 60s (or whatever decade hippies were from). Ok so it was called Port St John. The hostel we stayed in (www.amapondo.co.za) smelt of dope, and the people who worked there looked like they were stoned on dope. Very strange. They did have nice rooms, albeit without a windows or a view, and nice food. We did get kept up at night by blaring music of partying hippies. I swear "Sweet Home Alabama" will never sound the same to me again!
Pic of me below, Mark reckons I was stoned from the fumes:

Along the Wild Coast to Cinsta next. There we stayed at Buccanneers Backpackers (www.cinsta.com) in a lovely ensuite double room with a view of the sea and a private sun deck. Food's not great here, we resorted to crossing the sea to get to a nearby grocers to buy food to cook. But you gotta love the view...

Storms River was an ace stop, this is where I went bungee jumping! The hostel was decent enough, it even had a cool monkey that looked freakily human:

The food wasn't great so we hit the "town" in search of our preferred cuisine. We weren't disappointed. When the name comes to mind I'll list the restaurants we visited there.

Finally, it was Cape Town. This was planned as the highlight of our trip - we had booked a villa to ourselves for 3 nights (see links from previous posts)! 2 nights in one with a private plunge pool, and 1 night in one with an outdoor shower.
The first one was split level with cool floating steps:

And of course, the plunge pool:

Just when we thought it couldn't get any better, we got a multi level villa - roof terrace, ground floor with living area and basement with bedroom complete with bath and outdoor shower. Ace!

The grand end of the trip was a 5* breakfast on the roof terrace, with beer!

The food at this place is good by the way, decent Thai - or rather decent to the Thai-food-deprived Aberdonians! =)
